Marshall & Bruce | Lunch & Learn

Off The Press

At Circa we have a curiosity for learning that never ends. Our latest topic of discussion has been learning more about both digital and offset printing. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing our work come to life as it transforms from what we see on screens into a tangible crisp piece of craft paper, perfectly laid with foil that glimmers in the light, yet still we wonder how did our work turn into what we hold in our hand. We set out to find the answer by visiting our printing partners at Marshall and Bruce company for a lunch and learn event.

Marshall and Bruce Company is home to the largest offset printer in Nashville. While we were there we learned about the offset printing process, and how our designs are translated into the final pieces we see! While visiting we were given a full tour by our contact, Rob Smith.

Offset printing is derived from the lithography printing that was introduced in Germany around 1796, but has ultimately be perfected over the years as technology and time perfected the use of inks and paper.

We began our tour by watching the plates being made. Each plate is coated with care, crucial to the offset printing process and the reason the process is still used today. The plates are treated with chemicals to creating surfaces that hold and repel ink. Each plate represents one color that will be printed on the CMYK final piece.

Marshall and Bruce, while sticking true to the old ways, the introduction and acceptance of new ways has made them a top notch printer that has allowed us to introduce new techniques such as, UV printing, blister cards, digital white ink, and more, to our clients.
