In Fine Print

Design and branding is everywhere. Even as the digital world seems to takeover, design continues to control the material world through signs, packaging, and apparel. At Circa, we value the process that transforms our designs into products and want to learn the intricacies that provide the highest quality results. This week, we took a tour at Dynamark Printing, lead by our trusted chaperone, Rob Kohls, who has been in printing for over 28 years. As we walked through Dynamark, it became evident that the office space is a giant showcase for all of their work. All of the Dynamark signs were printed in-house, ranging from vinyl printed wallpaper to acrylic cut-outs. Accompanying the plethora of awards that hang on the office walls are quirky prints such as the tunnel of (printed) bugs we traversed through and a plank we balanced across in order to avoid the snake-pit printed beneath it.

Color and Print

In beginner art class, we were all amazed when mixing blue and yellow paints made green. The primary colors are magical for color creation. However, in the world of printing, they use a completely different color wheel to ensure a four color printing process. For the most depth of color, printers use a color wheel called CMYK to denote the colors, cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Using CMYK, printers are able to create every color in the rainbow or “full color”.

The most frequently offered processes to print the colors are aqueous, indigo and UV printing for all levels of high quality sheen.

+Aqueous Printing is a water-based ink which is mixed with a colored pigment or a dye and is best used for canvas and fine papers.

+Indigo Printing involves a fine pigment that is mixed with an oil carrier which is best used for digital photo books and plastic products.

+UV Printing uses pigment ink but dries it with UV light before it exits the printer which is best for large format production.

Vinyl

We constantly get requests for vinyl signs because of their low cost production and quick turn around. On our tour, we learned about four types of vinyl prints that Dynamark has worked with proficiently:

+regular vinyl which is perfect for making graphics pop and can withstand the outdoors

+frost vinyl which has a frosted and sleek look

+perforated vinyl which can be used on windows to display a logo from the outside while remaining transparent from the inside

+label vinyl for heavy duty stickers or decals

But Dynamark doesn’t stop with vinyl. They also print on paper, metal, fabric, wood, and are the only gig in town that can print on glass. The sheer diversity of signage became clear as we walked down a “Hall of Fame”-esque display of signs, ranging from engraved glass to rustic wood and a three dimensional printed dog.

Labels

Labels are important for brand recognition and a finished look to a product.

Digital printers can create labels that can be cut in-line into any shape a client imagines at a cost-efficient rate.

For larger scale label printing, there is a six color label press that can print 50 labels or a roll that has a 4 ft diameter. With over one hundred die to choose from and the option to order a personalized die, there are endless possibilities for label designs.

Conclusion

Walking through the print process with Dynamark reminded us about the magical possibilities of printing as long as we abide by a specific process and timeline and understand the delicate expertise of our print partners.

Here are a few tips for successful print projects:

1. Find your printer and begin communication at the beginning of the project.
2. Create a timeline that is realistic for the print media.
3. When time allows, press proof to check colors and content.

While Circa enjoys helping clients navigate the print process, client’s can save their budget if they choose to do this process themselves. For more information, contact Dynamark. We know Rob will be happy to help!
